Land Clearing Services for Glens Falls, Queensbury and Saratoga Springs

When you need land cleared around Glens Falls, call Elevated Outdoors at (518) 760-1339. Land clearing is often the first step of a job for us, and we clear trees, brush and undergrowth to make room for a new house, a driveway, a field or open ground. We work in Glens Falls, Queensbury, Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Fort Ann, Argyle and nearby towns, where many building lots start out wooded. Late fall and winter are good seasons for clearing, so a call now can put the work ahead of spring construction.

Because excavation is our main work, clearing a lot doesn't stop at the tree line. The same crew can clear the ground and then dig and grade it for whatever you're building, which keeps the whole project on one schedule. For a single tree or two, see our tree removal page.

Land Clearing Work We Can Help With

Clearing Wooded Lots for New Homes

A house site needs more than the trees cut. The stumps and roots have to come out of the footprint and the driveway, because buried wood rots and lets the ground settle under a foundation or slab. Elevated Outdoors clears the area marked on the plan, leaves the trees you want to keep, and can move straight into the foundation dig once the ground is open. Walking the lot with the plan in hand before any cutting starts is the best way to decide which trees stay.

Driveway and Access Clearing

A long driveway through the woods, a camp road that has grown in, or access for equipment to the back of a property all start with clearing a path wide enough for the work. A driveway also needs the stumps and roots out of its route, so the gravel base can be built on firm ground, and we can build that base as part of the same job.

Brush and Overgrowth Removal

Fields that have gone back to brush, overgrown fence lines and yards taken over by saplings and undergrowth can be opened back up. How far the clearing goes depends on what the ground will be used for. A field or a view may only need cutting, while ground that will be built on or graded needs the stumps and roots out. We'll go over the difference with you before the work starts.

Getting Cleared Ground Ready to Build

Bare soil washes away in heavy rain, so cleared ground should be built on, graded or seeded soon after the clearing is done. On larger jobs, silt fence along the low side keeps soil out of ditches and streams. Because grading and excavation are our main work, Elevated Outdoors can take a cleared lot straight into the next phase rather than leaving it exposed through the next storm.

Step by step

How a Lot Gets Cleared

  • Marking the Area

The property lines, the area to clear and any trees you want to keep are flagged before a saw starts, so everyone is working from the same plan.

    01
  • Cutting and Clearing

Trees come down and the brush is cleared from the marked area. Trees close to anything you're keeping come down with extra care.

    02
  • Stumps and Roots

Where something will be built, the stumps and roots come out so the ground underneath can be dug and packed. Where it's going back to lawn or field, they can be ground down instead.

    03
  • Stabilizing the Ground

Cleared ground is built on, graded or seeded soon after, so heavy rain doesn't wash the soil away. Bigger jobs get silt fence along the low side.

    When to Clear Land

Late fall and winter work well, because frozen ground holds equipment with less rutting and the leaves are down. Spring mud season is the hardest time. If you plan to burn brush yourself, New York bans brush burning statewide from March 16 to May 14.

  • 02

What Affects the Cost of Land Clearing

How much ground there is and how thick the growth is come first. Open woods on flat ground clear faster than dense brush and large trees on a slope, and wet ground slows everything. A house site that needs the stumps and roots out costs more than a field that only needs cutting.

  • 03

    Property Lines, Wetlands and Permits

Know where your property lines are, and have them marked if there's any doubt. Wet areas and streams have their own rules, so check with the town and the DEC first. Disturbing an acre or more for a building project usually requires a state stormwater permit.

Why Elevated Outdoors

Why Hire Elevated Outdoors for Land Clearing

Clearing and Excavation From One Crew

Most building lots go from clearing straight into excavation. Elevated Outdoors does both, so the stumps come out with the dig in mind, the ground is left ready for the foundation, and there's no gap in the schedule while you wait for a second contractor to arrive.

A Plan You Understand Before Work Starts

Doug started the business with a focus on communication, after years at larger companies where customers were left out of the loop. Before clearing begins, you'll know what area is coming down, which trees are staying, and what the ground will look like when we're done, so nothing about the finished lot comes as a surprise.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Land Clearing

  • It depends on how much ground there is, how thick the trees and brush are, the slope and access, and whether the stumps and roots need to come out. Tell us where the land is, roughly how much needs clearing and what it's for, and we'll talk through a price.

  • Yes. We do excavation and site work for new homes, so clearing and digging can be one job with one schedule.

  • Yes. Flag the trees you want to keep and the edge of the area to clear, and the rest stays standing.

  • Under anything that will be built on, yes. Stumps and roots left under a foundation, slab or driveway rot over time and let the ground settle. Where the land will be lawn or field, stumps can often be ground down instead.

  • Late fall and winter. Frozen ground holds equipment with less rutting, and with the leaves down it's easier to see what you're working with. Spring mud season is the hardest time to run heavy equipment.

  • Often not for a small residential lot, but it depends on the town and the land. Wetlands, streams and shoreline areas have their own rules, and disturbing an acre or more for construction usually needs a state stormwater permit.

  • Not from March 16 to May 14, when New York bans brush burning statewide. Outside those dates, many smaller towns allow it, but local rules vary, so check with your town and fire department first.

  • Tree removal deals with one or a few specific trees, often near a house. Land clearing covers a whole area of trees, brush and undergrowth, usually to make room for building, a driveway or open ground.

  • It can if bare ground is left exposed. Cleared soil should be built on, graded or seeded soon after, and larger sites need silt fence along the low side to keep soil out of ditches and streams.

  • Elevated Outdoors works in Glens Falls, Queensbury, Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Fort Ann, Argyle and nearby towns, and crosses into Vermont for jobs in Castleton and as far north as Middlebury. If you're not sure we cover your town, call and ask.
